The studio environment is an open space for sharing wild ideas. Sometimes, just visualizing an idea that you may initially think is too outlandish is exactly what you need to move in an innovative direction. You'll explore this concept more in the brainstorming phase of the studio.

In this exercise, we will practice fearless ideation by using unlikely connections to generate out-of-the-box ideas.

Ideation, noun, : the formation of ideas or concepts.

Instructions

Part 1: As a class, write a series of fun verbs and nouns on slips of paper (one word per piece of paper). Add all of the slips into a bag or a hat.

Part 2: Pair up and grab some nouns and verbs out of the bag. Combine the words in playful ways to help generate ideas for fun new products. If you need different words, get more out of the bag or swap words with another team. The goal is to come up with a phrase that makes you laugh.

Joselyn from NuVu just did this activity, and here are some of her favorite combos:

  1. Pickle suit
  2. Rainbow handstand backflip
  3.  Smell Flowers waterslide partying (this sounds fun!)

Part 3: Come up with a new-to-the-world product based on a funny combination of the words. It's fine to be just loosely inspired by a phrase. Sketch your idea like the images in the presentation above. Then make a physical prototype of your product idea.

Part 4: Pitch your silly product idea to the class like you're trying to get investment funding for your product. Have fun!
